Should Christians be patriotic? It is an interesting question to say the least. Patriotism is a love for one’s country, heritage, or people. Throughout America’s brief history we have seen incredible patriots risk everything out of devotion to their beloved country. Men like Nathan Hale who after being captured as a spy, and ushered up to the gallows to be hanged, used his final breaths to state “My only regret is that I have but one life to lose for my country.” There are many others with similar stories whose name has faded in time. The one thing that all the great leaders in American history have in common is that they were extremely patriotic and had a love for their country.
What many don’t realize is that some of the greatest leaders in the Bible where extremely patriotic. Esther was a Persian queen, but remembered and loved her Jewish heritage. She even risked her life to save the Jewish people. Joseph requested that his bones be buried in the land of his ancestors. Jacob, living with his sons, told them that he wanted his body taken and buried with his ancestors as well. Nehemiah wanted to return to his homeland so he could rebuild their wall. Even Jesus, the greatest patriot of all, wept for his people in Luke 19.
The Bible is packed with inspiring accounts of patriots who loved God and loved their country. If Jesus held that sense of patriotism it seems safe to say that we as God fearing Americans should hold to the same standard. What can make this whole concept of patriotism difficult for some Christians is that America has slipped from the Biblical principles that have been in place since the pilgrims landed here; there is little doubt about that. Once again it would only make sense to look toward the example that Jesus set while on this earth. He continued to love his country even though they had obviously abandoned their principles.
Patriotism binds a nation together, and we need Christian patriots now more than ever. Will you renew your sense of patriotism just as the men and woman of the Bible, or will you stand in the back and watch as the nation that Nathan Hale was willing to lay down multiple lives for drifts into oblivion? We have a duty and example of patriotism to not what America is but to what America should be. When was the last time you wept or spent earnest time in prayer over America? Christians must have a sense of patriotism and strive to save their country.
